The Real St. John Smythe

My Home by Joe Colombo

February 28th, 1996

VISIONA 1This titan of tenacious techno trappings once said, “The possibilities presented by the extraordinary development of audiovisual processes are enormous … Distances will no longer have much importance; no longer will there be any justification for the ‘megalopolis’ … Furnishings will disappear … the habitat will be everywhere… Now, if the elements necessary to human existence could be planned with the sole requirements of maneuverability and flexibility…,then we would create an inhabitable system that could be adapted to any situation in space and time…”

I took these very words to heart when I designed my home, “St. John’s Wood”, in the Hollywood Hills (yes the one you saw in innumerable 80’s TV shows, until Lee Majors soiled my rug and spoiled the fun for everyone).

People have likened it to Colombo’s “VISIONA 1“, with a dash of his “TOTAL FURNISHING UNIT“, and an invasion natural elements - my favorite being the “Sequoia Grotto” that’s my lounge.

Controversy still abounds about a famous photo that was printed in a Japanese architectural magazine, which credits Joe as being the seated subject. However, I can confirm that it was in fact me. Lets just say that no one spoke each other’s language, and the sake flowed very freely. On the same site you can see another picture of Joe Colombo, which illustrates our profound oneness regarding not just interior design, but also personal fashion sense. I can’t help but wonder where the world would be today if his illustrious life were not cut so savagely short.
